Native people had "heard the call" to arms at the beginning of World War I. Native volunteers from all over the country had joined to fight the war. In Northwest Ontario, these volunteers came to the local detachments to join in the cause. These men were trained along side their fellow non-aboriginal soldiers. They were trained at first in Canada, then in Europe.
